Peace Portal India

Peace Portal India is a partnership ministry for the education, social, and spiritual needs of the Dalits in rural India.
MISSIONS TRIP
From January 29 - February 13, 2012, a team from Peace Portal traveled to India. Their itinerary included a visit to The Good Shepherd School that Peace Portal is partnering with.

POPULATION
The Good Shepherd School is in a village of approximately 15,000 people. There are approximately 46,000 people in 15 villages who live within five kilometers of this village and will benefit from the School. The majority of these people are Dalits.
EDUCATION
The literacy rate in our partner village is only 45%, which is less than the national average. However, 125 children are currently enrolled in a rented facility, excited to move into their permanent school when it is constructed. An English-medium school has never existed in this area. The locals are extremely supportive and thankful for this Good Shepherd School.
ECONOMY
This area is considered one of the most underdeveloped areas of the Andhra Pradesh state. Agricultural work is the main source of employment, but is inconsistent and pays low wages despite the tiresome, physically laborious efforts it requires. Most families live in semi-permanent homes made from mud bricks. During the summer and winter months, these homes face destruction due to extreme monsoon rains.
